There is more.
In May of 2024 I held a worship service that was formative for me. The next morning in prayer I received a prompting to take a waterfall hike. As I sat in the wonder of Rutledge Falls, three words surfaced: “there is more.” A year later, I found myself visiting a church in another city when one of the Pastors felt led to offer a prophetic word. He said, “I haven’t felt this prompting in our other services but someone here needs to hear this phrase: “there is more.” He then proceeded to say “there is more” about 10 times. I knew at that moment God was confirming a new season in my life and this was made evident by His palpable presence, the hot tears running down my face, and the events that would follow in months to come. I call a series of events such as this…the activity of God. They often feel like crumbs on the trail of God's leadership within our lives as the Holy Spirit shepherds us into all truth.
Jesus says, “But I am telling you the truth: it is better for you that I go away, because if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. But if I do go away, then I will send Him to you.” John 16:7
Jesus’ ascension prepares the way for the arrival of our Helper, the Holy Spirit.
Friends, this means that the activity of God continues on today through the work of the Spirit - His gifts and His fruit. This means the God of the Old and New Testament still jumps off of the pages of scripture and into our stories in real time but we must have hearts attuned to His activity to discern into moments when God is overshadowing the natural with His supernatural power.
The Bible reveals two general paths in which God’s supernatural activity intersects with our natural world: Specific Revelation (God’s Word) and General Revelation (Creation) In both conduits, we must do two things:
- Become fully present to God’s Presence since a distracted and hurried heart cannot receive the gift of noticing God’s external and internal movements.
- Invite the Holy Spirit to speak and open our eyes to the wisdom and revelation God is offering.
It must be said that the gift of this level of attunement with God is counter cultural because it stands in contrast to a compartmental view of Him in which the lion’s share of our time, talents, treasures, and focus are more attuned to the sound of cultural clamor than to the question of all questions: “What is God saying?”
The truth is we need so much more than a peripheral understanding of Him. We must come face to face and invite the Spirit, to help us notice the activity of God, to give us a second sight beyond mere human awareness and understanding. And we need this on a daily, hourly, minute by minute basis. Without this level of attunement, life can easily become a cycle of doing more and trying harder only to miss the miracle of God’s intentional, relational love.
How will you be intentional about cultivating a heart posture open to the activity of God?
Here are 2 practical ways:
-
Listening Space. God never wastes the space we choose to give Him. This will look different across seasons of life but the operative word is margin. Where will you plan unhindered margin in your day and how will you spend that margin with God to lean into the two conduits that usher in His activity: specific and general revelation. Once you’ve been intentional with cultivating space, how will you posture your heart for reflection, confession, and communion with God?
-
Hunger. Matthew 5:6 reminds us, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” The role of expectancy in any relationship cannot be overemphasized. This looks like an eager expectation for a quantity of quality time with God. Be honest as you reflect. How would you rate your hunger for God? Is there anything or anyone in your life attempting to satiate a hunger that only God was meant to fill? If you are in a place of hunger, how will you communicate this to God in your prayer life, in your priorities, in your actions, and in your awareness of His activity?
There is more. There is more because God Himself is an everlasting Source of love, truth, hope and presence. What is your next step in becoming more attuned to Him so that you have eyes to see the “more” He is inviting you into?
